How has Exscribe’s EHR affected your practice?
I am a big fan of Exscribe. It is a well thought out and user-friendly system, which is easily adaptable to any style of practice. I couldn’t have imagined that I would like it as much as I do. Exscribe’s EHR saves countless hours and frustration.
First, our practice is much more efficient. My notes are better and are completed by the end of the day. I can see 40 people throughout the workday and not be exhausted.
Before implementation, I practiced the EHR and realized that the 2 to 3 minutes I spent on dictation were not only tiring, but also a waste of time. I’ve completely cut that out of my day now. With the extra time, I’ve added more patients to my schedule.
Ultimately, when I looked at my mentors, they took the time to listen to their patients and to examine them while they let the junior residents take notes. As orthopedic docs, we need to get back to doctoring.
How has your EHR affected your workflow?
Someone who witnessed our workflow said my assistant and I are like an orchestra: I do my part, my assistant does hers and we are in concert. We have customized our templates so they flow in an order that’s efficient and makes sense.
Here’s how I use my EHR:
We use the scribe method. My assistant enters the exam room with me. I maintain eye contact with my patient and I’m able to focus on him or her. I speak my findings to my assistant, who has our EHR in hand. As I go through my tests, I tell her when a test is positive. At the end of the evaluation, I tell my patient, “It appears you have x, y or z” and I tell him or her about treatment options. My assistant stays behind to write up orders for MRIs and/or scripts.
When I leave the room, I start reading about my next patient. As soon as I sense that my assistant is done with the previous patient, I read those notes, click finish and then I’m ready for the next patient.
I would advise colleagues to invest time to customize your EHR before you go live. Figure out your 10 most common diagnoses. That way, you can make your EHR work for you.
What has been the most helpful feature or outcome?
Exscribe’s EHR allows us to keep compliant and to get credit for all of the things we’re already doing.
Why in the selection process did you pick Exscribe?
The leadership at Exscribe is very bright and helpful. I’m impressed with Dr. Sachdev’s vision for the company.
